To the author of 'governmentality and critique': I would certainly be interested in hearing more. I too am in hte midst of a dissertation on Foucault's later writings, and I too do not buy the Habermas/Taylor criticism of F's later writings.

All in all, in his history of governmentality Foucault endeavors to show how the modern sovereign state and the modern autonomous individual co-determine each other's emergence (Lect. Feb. 8, 1978/1982b, 16-7; Foucault 1982a, 220-1; Senellart 1995).3 The concept of governmentality has correctly been regarded as a “key notion” (Allen 1991, 431) or a “deranging term” (Keenan 1982, 36) of Foucault’s work.

Of particular interest is Giorgio Agamben’s recent critique and extension of Foucault’s genealogy of government.
